- Herald Sports Writer

The Steers will kick off it's season tonight, as they host the Pampa Harvesters at Memorial Stadium. Last year, the Steers made the long trip and suffered a blowout loss to the Harvesters, with a final score of 58-7. The Steers are looking to reverse the role this time around.

In order to do that, the Steers will needs it's young players on this year's team to step up. The Steers lost some of there skilled players to graduation this past May however, the matchup should be even this time around. Pampa also lost some of it's skilled players to graduation this past year and will look to its younger group of kids to step up as well.

Heading into the matchup, the Steers will be strong on both the offensive and defensive lines, with senior right tackle Nicholas Garcia and senior defensive tackle Rahlei Eddington leading the way. Junior quarterback Gavin Padron will look to be the starter for the Steers come Friday night, with senior Eli Cobos taking snaps when needed. Cobos will be starting in the receiver and defensive back positions for the Steers Friday night.

The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight at Memorial Stadium. Come on out and support the Steers football team!

STRONG AND FAST START WILL BE KEY FOR STEERS

Two weeks ago the Steers held their first scrimmage at home against a tough Greenwood team and head coach Cannon McWilliams was impressed with what he saw in his team. McWilliams said that his defense played lights out in that game and the offense looked really good, especially when they ran the ball.

In their last scrimmage against Levelland last week, the Steers got off to a slower start than they did against Greenwood. The Steers struggled early on in the scrimmage but as it went along they progressed and ended the night on high note.

“It was just slow and we didn't come out, to me, like when we played Greenwood.” McWilliams said. “Once it got going towards the end we were hitting on all cylinders.”

McWilliams said the important thing for the Steers heading into tonight's matchup against Pampa will be to play consistently from start to finish and to match their physicality. “Pampa is big and physical and we're going to have to match their physicality,” McWilliams said. “Like us, they graduated a lot of skill kids, so I think it will be a good contest. We've just got to continue to get better.”
