Several Steers set new personal bests at Todd Martin Ranger Relays

The Big Spring High School boys track team competed in the Todd Martin Ranger Relays this past Saturday in Greenwood. The Steers finished seventh overall as a team tying with Lubbock Coronado with 36 points total. Several Steer athletes ran and jumped to personal bests at the meet.

Senior Isaac Gonzales continues to impress as the season progresses. Gonzales once again claimed first place in the varsity boys 3200 meter race with a time of 10:14.86. Gonzales has been undefeated so far this season in the 3200 meters. Gonzales followed that up by winning the varsity boys 1600 meter race in a time of 4:36.16 which is a new personal best this season.

Fellow teammate Diego “Don” Rios also had a great meet as he set two new personal bests. Rios competed in the both the varsity boys 800 meters and 1600 meters. Rios finished fifth overall in the 800 meters running to a personal best of 2:06.20. Rios followed that up with a tenth place finish in the 1600 meters and again running a personal best of 4:58.16.

Big Spring's Zeyire Franklin also had a big day at the meet as he also set a few personal bests on Saturday. Franklin competed in the both the varsity boys high and long jump events. Franklin finished fourth overall in the high jump, jumping to a personal best of 5 feet. Franklin would finish second overall in the long jump as he jumped to a personal and season best of 21' 5.5''.

Franklin also ran in the varsity boys 200 meter race as he finished seventh overall with a personal best of 23.56. Big Spring's Jacob Cantu competed in the varsity boys 100 meter dash and finished twelfth overall with a time of 11.82 (PR).

Big Spring seniors Ismael Castillo and Karim Rayford competed in the varsity boys pole vault and set new personal bests on the season. Castillo finished eight overall with a vault of 10 feet while Rayford finished ninth overall with a vault of 9 feet.
