BSHS girls track team impressive at Todd Martin Ranger Relays Lady Steers finish fourth overall in a strong field

The Lady Steers track team continues to improve and impress as the season progresses. The Big Spring girls varsity track team recently competed at the Todd Martin Ranger Relays in Greenwood this past Saturday where they finished fourth overall as a team which included mostly 5A and 6A schools.

The Lady Steers beat district rival Lubbock Estacado and regional rival Monahans in the team standings. Midland Greenwood was the only other 4A team that finished ahead of Big Spring in third place. Overall, the Lady Steers had several individual­s that set personal bests at the meet.

Freshmen Bergan Pinkley continues to shine in the varsity girls 800 meter and 400 meter races. Pinkley once again won the 800 meter race with a time of 2:25.68 for a new personal best this season. Pinkley followed that up with a second place finish in the 400 meters race. Pinkley again ran a new personal best with a time of 1:03.05.

Mehan would finish tenth overall with a jump of 4' 6''. Mehan also competed in the triple jump event where she finished sixth overall with a jump of 31' 7.5''.

In the running events, Mehan continued to shine as she had a first place finish in the varsity girls 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.53. Mehan also finished second in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 51.44. Both times were new personal bests of the season.

Fellow teammate and junior Kyleena Hughes had an impressive showing in the varsity girls 200 meter race. Hughes would finish second overall with a time of 26.82 for a new personal best this season.

Senior Aolani Mendez had a strong showing in the varsity girls pole vault event. Mendez would vault 8' 6'' to finish sixth overall in the event which is already better than last year's height at the Region I meet.

The Lady Steers relay teams also had a strong showing at the meet. Both the 4x200 and 4x400 meter relay teams would finish fifth overall, while Big Spring's 4x100 meter relay team finished seventh overall.
