SCORING BARRAGE ENDS STEERS SEASON EIGHT-RUN FIFTH PROPELS FRENSHIP TO 15-7 WIN IN AREA PLAYOFF GAME

Back on May 22nd of 1993, then Herald Sports Editor, Mike Butts, covered the Steers baseball team and their area playoff matchup against the Frenship Tigers.

The Tigers ended the Steers season in that game using a eightrun scoring rally in the fifth to propel them to an eventual 15-7 win over Big Spring. Per Butts, the Tigers utilized not one but three scoring rallies in the game that accounted for 13 runs over three innings.

The Steers hurt themselves during those scoring drives as they started out with two outs. Per Butts the Steers simply struggled to just get the final out when they needed it.

Big Spring utilized four different pitchers in the game, with Luis Bustamante getting the start. After the game then head Big Spring head baseball coach Bobby Doe was quoted saying in fragments “Didn't have it … no pitching today … I don't know just didn't have any strikes,” Doe said.

Steers senior second baseman was also disappointed in the loss and was quoted saying “It's pretty bad to get beat by that many runs … I didn't think they were that good at all, We beat ourselves”

It was a close game as the Steers headed into the bottom of the fourth down by one with the score at 4-3. The Steers would score all four runs in the frame to take a 7-3 lead. However, the Tigers would explode in the fifth inning and score the rest of the game to secure the 15-7 win.

HUFF INKS DEAL WITH SO. NAZARENE

Back on May 22nd, then Herald Sports Editor, Tommy Wells, reported that Forsan High School senior Brent Huff signed with Southern Nazarene University, a Division I NAIA program out of Bethany Oklahoma.

Huff signed a scholarship with the university to further not only his academic career but his athletic career as well. At that time Huff was the only local student to sign for a basketball scholarship.

Huff was a star for the Forsan Buffaloes basketball team. He averaged just under 20 points a game that season, helped lead the Buffaloes to a district title that season.

That year the Crimson Storm, had hired a new coach in Michael Broughton to help rebuild the program that was once a national powerhouse years before. Wells had also reported that Huffs parents were excited for their son and that decision to attend was a no-brainer.

“It's our church regional school, We've always felt a christian education was the most important thing, It's a great school where he can get a quality education, Getting to play college basketball is an added benefit for him, It's important in that it helps make him a well-rounded person,” Kriss Huff (Brent's mother) said.

Wells reported that Huff would also be attending the same college as his sister who was a junior at the time of the story.
