UIL CLASS 3A REGION I CHAMPIONS Coahoma sweeps Lamesa to earn second trip back to state

LAMESA – All season long the Coahoma Bulldogett­es have been on a mission to get back to the state softball tournament in Austin in hopes of capturing their second state title. Mission accomplish­ed!

The Bulldogett­es punched their ticket over the weekend after sweeping Lamesa in a best of three game series. Coahoma beat the Lady Golden Tors on Friday 10-0 in five innings and completed the sweep on Saturday with a 14-1 win.

With the win, Coahoma repeats as the Class 3A Region I Champions but more importantl­y heads back to the state tournament for the second year in a row. Now Coahoma will try to capture what eluded them last year. A state title! The Bulldogett­es are now just two wins away from their second state title in school history after losing to Halletsvil­le in the 2022 state title game.

The Bulldogett­es, ranked No. 2, will play today at Red & Charline McCombs Field in Austin in the state semifinals against No. 4 Rains at 1 p.m. Should the Bulldogett­es win they will play the winner of the Grandview and Saint Gertrudis Academy semfinal matchup on Thursday at 1 p.m.

Coahoma jumped out to a 1-0 series lead after beating Lamesa Friday night 10-0 in Coahoma at Dicky Stone Field. The game went late into the evening as the game was delayed due to lightning in the bottom of the first inning.

Before the delay, Coahoma jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to Hannah Wells and Shae Lang. Wells brought in the first run off of a double fly ball to right field. Lang would bring in Coahoma's second run on a ground ball to first. Lang would be out at first but not before bringing in another run.

A little over two hours later, the game resumed, and Coahoma picked where they left off. Coahoma would score two more runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-0 lead. The Bulldogett­es really opened up the game in the bottom of the fourth as they tallied a total of four runs to take a 9-0 lead.

Coahoma would put the game away in the bottom of the fifth as Lang hit a fly ball resulting in an error by Lamesa's first baseman and bringing in the winning run.

Wells earned the win in the circle for Coahoma as she pitched all five innings. Wells surrendere­d zero runs on zero hits, while giving up two walks, and struck out six at the plate.

Lamesa's Layla Vasquez took the loss for the Lady Tornadoes. Vasquez pitched all four innings giving up 10 runs off of 11 hits, with six walks, and struck out five.

Wells, Clemmer, and Karleigh Burt led the Bulldogett­es at the plate in Game 1. Clemmer finished the game going 2-for-2 with an RBI. Wells went 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored and an RBI. Burt finished the game going 2-for-3 with 2 RBI.

Christian Everett finished the game going 2-for-4 with one run scored. In Game 2, Coahoma rode an early seven-run lead in a dominating 14-1 win to earn their second consecutiv­e Class 3A Region I title and a second trip back to Austin. Coahoma's Brynn Rodgers led things off in the top of the first on a sac-fly to left field to bring in the Bulldogett­es first run.

Lang would keep the momentum up on the next at bat as she blasted a tworun home run over left field to give Coahoma a 3-0 lead after one inning. Coahoma would add four more runs in the top of the second to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Leading the charge was Neveah Kerby who brought in Baylor Wright on double fly ball to left.

Everett would bring in Kerby on the next at bat thanks to a line drive single to right field. Wells would hit a two-run home run on the next at bat over left field. Lamesa would score its only run in the game in the bottom of the second thanks to a fly ball single to left field.

Both teams would go scoreless in the third and fourth innings before Coahoma would put the game away for good in the top of the fifth. The Bulldogett­es would score seven more runs to take a 14-1 lead. That would prove to be too much for Lamesa to overcome as they Lady Golden Tornadoes went a quick three and out to end the game.

Coahoma's Makayla Calvio earned the win for the Bulldogett­es in the circle. Calvio pitched for four innings giving up one run on four hits, with two walks, and struck out three at the plate. Wells closed out the game to seal the win.

Vasquez again took the loss for Lamesa in the circle. Vasquez pitched all five innings, giving up 14 runs on 14 hits, with five walks, and struck out three.

Wells, Lang, Wright, and Everett led the way for the Bulldogett­es at the plate. Wells finished the game going 4-for-4 with three runs scored, and had 4 RBI's. Lang finished the game going 3-for-4 at the plate with one run scored, and 4 RBI's.

Wright finished the game going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and had an RBI, while Everett finished the game going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and had 2 RBI.
