Big Spring Swimmers finish the season in regional action

ANDREWS – The Big Spring High School swim team was in regional action this past weekend at the Andrews High School Aquatic center qualifying two girls and a men’s relay for the Saturday afternoon finals.

In the girls 200 medley relay the Lady Steers team made up of Patricia St. Clair-backstroke, Steffany Pina Armenta with the Breaststro­ke, Arley Cruz-Garcia in the Butterfly, with Emma Walker anchoring the team in Freestyle. The ladies finished fifth in the region dropping two seconds off their best time of the year with a time of 2:29.19 in the event. The team from Decatur High took home the gold with a scorching 1:59.47, besting second place Andrews by over two seconds.

In the boy’s medley relay, it was the team of Myles Weldon-Backstroke, Eli McCoy in the Breaststro­ke, Matthew Nieves in the Butterfly, with Aaron Ramirez Varela bringing it home in the Freestyle.

Varela was replacing Diego Enriquez Ramirez who suffered an Achilles injury just prior to the meet. The guys finished the meet with a 2:10.63, good enough for a seventh-place finish in the finals. The host Andrews Mustangs claimed the regional title finishing the swim in 1:41.58 seconds just inching out the win over Decatur.

In the final event of the day for the Steer swimmers, the girls 200 freestyle relay was in action taking a fourth-place finish and just missing the podium with a time of 2:08.23. The team, comprised of Garcia, Armenta, St. Clair, and Walker and alternate Anjelika Yanez who did compete Friday in the prelims due to an injury on the squad.

This was the final meet of the season for the Steers swimmers who will be losing only three seniors, Arley CruzGarcia, Steffany Pina Armenta, and Matthew Nieves, from this year’s team leaving the future looking bright at Big Spring High. The Steers were lead through the season by Head Coach Sarah Heffle, with Brandon Hallford and Gail Compos assisting her with the squad.

Next up is the Junior High schedule which begins March 2nd at Odessa Permian’s pool.
