House finches are the subject of extensive research. Their range expanded drastically after 1940, when New York pet stores introduced the southwestern bird to the East Coast. The stores were selling covertly trafficked California house finches as “Hollywood finches.” Getting word of a pending crackdown, the store owners simply released their illegal stock into the wild.
