Three must-see activities at Longwood Gardens.

- BY LISA BALLARD

1 Chase away the winter chill inside the 4-acre conservatory where a 12-foot-high archway of orchids welcomes you to the annual Orchid Extravaganza event (this year it’s Jan. 19-March 24, 2019). Longwood Gardens’ orchid collection includes 6,000 plants.

2 During the holiday season, the former estate of Pierre S. du Pont, an American industrialist, twinkles with 500,000 lights and a plethora of poinsettias. The annual exhibit, aptly called A Longwood Christmas, runs Nov. 22-Jan. 6, 2019.

3 Come spring, sip a craft brew in the Beer Garden and learn about the botany of beer. Longwood Gardens collaborates with Victory Brewing Co. to grow ingredients, such as hops, cherries, peaches and strawberries, used in the seasonal brewing process.
