1. Painted Bunting

HOT SPOT: Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, Florida With an unbelievable rainbow palette of feathers, male painted buntings look like something from the imagination. But despite their brilliance, they are hard to spot. Females and young males are especially tricky to see because of their greenish color. They like to skulk in overgrown fields and shrub thickets where they blend in. Painted buntings visit feeders, making that the easiest place to check them off your list. This species breeds in south central states and along the southeast coast, and a few winter in Florida.
