9. Acorn Woodpecker

Acorn woodpeckers sport bold field marks, and they are so much fun to observe. These woodpeckers live in complex social colonies and spend much of their time caching nuts. Look for a granary tree loaded with acorns pounded into the trunk and branches to find these winged jesters. In addition to the stored meals, acorn woodpeckers eat a varied diet including insects, berries, tree sap and suet. Acorn woodpeckers are found in the southwestern states and north into Oregon.
