Is it safe to put out tinsel from my Christmas tree for the birds to use as nesting material?

- Debbie Greenwaldt WAUKESHA, WISCONSIN

Kenn and Kimberly: We admire your interest in helping the birds. However, because unnatural materials like tinsel (and Easter grass) pose a potential strangling hazard, they are not safe nesting materials. Even yarn and string can be dangerous, especially if the strands are too long. Some wild bird feeding stores sell balls of nesting materials that are safe for birds, but providing nest material isn’t really necessary. Birds are very good at finding natural materials on their own.
