Birds & Blooms

The western tanager

- Allen Livingston HUNTINGTON, UTAH

is one of the most colorful birds in Utah’s Colorado Plateau. I named this colorful specimen “Spot” for the unusual orange markings on its body. It began drinking from one of my oriole feeders, something I’d never seen before. Later, two males in their first spring and three females who had been watching Spot sampled the nectar, too. I was quite amused by this apparently learned behavior.
