IN 1973, WHEN SPECIES WITH NAMES LIKE

slate-colored, Oregon and white-winged juncos were all combined into one species, scientists looked for a neutral name. They chose one to distinguis­h this bird from the yellow-eyed junco, a bird with bright yellow-orange eyes that lives mainly in the mountains of Mexico and southern Arizona.
