Butterfly Season

- KIRSTEN SCHRADER, EXECUTIVE EDITOR

I’ve paid more attention to butterflies the past few years, both in my yard and while on walks and hikes. Late last summer, my husband and I explored a new-to-us trail that took us through multiple habitats, including a meadow. I was blown away by the number of butterflies flitting about, dancing at our feet. We spent a lot of time on that portion of the trail—i kept stopping to observe the tiny fliers, committing their markings to memory (and instructing my husband to do the same) to look up later in my field guide.

Whether you have been a butterfly lover for years or have only recently been distracted by the fluttering of tiny butterfly wings, like me, this is the issue for you!

Learn all about the amazing journey of a monarch in “An Epic Migration” on page 20. Indulge in beautiful butterfly photos in “Fluttering Faves” on page 38. You have to see reader Mary Carlson’s photo of five monarchs enjoying meadow blazing star—look closely to spot the fifth flier! And find out how to entice more butterflies with a simple watering hole in “Puddlin’ About” on page 52.

While you’re out butterfly-watching this summer, keep your camera close, because it’s time for our annual Backyard Photo Contest (get details on page 46). We love seeing your outdoor adventures, so submit your best bird, bloom and butterfly snapshots today.
