To ad­ver­tise his ter­ri­tory, a male tern (left) flies over the colony with a fish. Courtship be­gins when a fe­male fol­lows and the male gives her his catch. Af­ter more be­hav­iors, like pos­tur­ing and strut­ting, the male con­tin­ues to feed the fe­male un­til she lays a clutch of eggs.
