John James Audubon lived in Hen­der­son, Ken­tucky, for about a decade. While there, he painted and stud­ied the lo­cal birds, and be­gan col­lect­ing ma­te­ri­als for his most fa­mous work, The Birds of Amer­ica. The four-vol­ume set, first pub­lished be­tween 1827 and 1838, con­tains 435 life-size wa­ter­color paint­ings of North Amer­i­can birds. Audubon’s work set a new stan­dard for wildlife artists.
