2020 CENSUS IN SAN LUIS

BACK ON SEPTEMBER 4, 1979, a group of community leaders requested to the Yuma County Board of Supervisors to have San Luis formally incorporated as an official town. The City of San Luis is celebrating 40 years of being incorporated with various events.

The City of San Luis became a city from the combination of labor force, the agricultural community in Yuma County and visitors from our sister city, San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora. Today, the City of San Luis is home to more than 36,000 residents and rapidly growing at 12% within the first few months of 2019. The City of San Luis has been named one of the fastest growing cities in the United States by Go Banking Rates.

In 2019 alone, the City of San Luis has issued 296 new building permits and over five subdivisions with a total of 421 lots that have been approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission and by the Mayor and City Council.

Having had an increase of population, an accurate count of the 2020 Census is important. The 2020 Census provides a visual of the city that helps determine where new schools, hospitals, and businesses are to be built. A complete count also helps with the distribution of federal funding and many other essential aspects beneficial to our community.

For the 2020 Census, the City of San Luis Mayor and City Council have allocated a total of $25,000 to ensure everyone in the city is counted. There are several challenges, including census material not being mailed out to San Luis residents, language barriers, and not having a clear understanding of the purpose of the census. The City of San Luis has formed a San Luis Complete Count Committee composed of members who live and/or work in the City of San Luis to bring a valuable perspective and expertise in reaching audiences.
