WOMEN IN BUSINESS
A TRIBUTE TO THE WOMEN IN BUSINESS IN YUMA COUNTY
Celebrating Yuma County’s Women in Business
WOMEN-OWNED BUSINESSES REPRESENT 42% of all businesses – nearly 13 million – in the United States.
They employ 9.4 million workers and generate revenue of $1.9 trillion, according to American Express’s State of Women-Owned Businesses report in 2019.
Between 2014 and 2019, the number of women-owned businesses climbed 21% to a total of nearly 13 million. Employment grew by 8% to 9.4 million. Revenue rose 21% to $1.9 trillion.
For comparison, the number of all businesses increased by 9% - while women-owned businesses grew by 21%.
And total employment of women-owned businesses grew by 8%, while for all businesses, that increase was only 1.8%.
American Express notes that a combination of
“necessity, flexibility and opportunity” are driving entrepreneurship for women.
Half of all women-owned businesses are concentrated in three industries:
• Other services such as hair and nail salons and pet care businesses
• Healthcare and social assistance, including child day care and home healthcare services
• Professional/scientific/technical services, such as lawyers, bookkeepers, architects, public relations firms and consultants
When looking at a historical perspective, in 1972, 4.6% of businesses were owned by women. And in 2019, that number stood at 42% - a significant increase in women ownership!
In fact, in 1973, there was only one woman who was the female CEO of a Fortune 500 company – Katherine Graham of the Washington Post. Under her leadership, the Post won the Pulitzer Prize – journalism’s highest award – for its coverage of the Watergate scandal.
Today, that number is at an all-time record, according to CNN, with 37 women running Fortune 500 companies.
