Shara Skinner

Student Leadership and Activities Coordinator, Arizona Western College

-

GROWING UP, SHARA Skinner never expected to become an educator. Instead, she said the career fell into her lap – but now, she couldn’t imagine doing anything else in the world.

“College students are hungry for knowledge and it shows. It is an intoxicating feeling getting to go to work every day knowing that there is a good chance that you are going to have a conversation that leads to someone’s growth while opening opportunities. It is really the most rewarding experience in the world and second to none,” Skinner said.

For almost 17 years, Skinner has worked at Arizona Western College, and currently is the student leadership and activities coordinator, as well as a psychology professor. She oversees the clubs and organizations, the campus food pantry, the esports team, student government and more.

“Every year holds something new because there is a different group of students and they all hold new ideas, goals and challenges for us to attack together. I make it my everyday goal to make students feel individually valued, important and believed in. In turn they give back to me by giving me purpose,” Skinner said.

Skinner said that an experience with a student during the pandemic was a reminder to her of a valuable lesson.

“Everyone is going through something big and that we are all here to help each other, encourage success, and to make a difference in each other’s lives,” she said.

Skinner is looking forward to a lifelong career as an educator.

“I am working towards becoming a full time Psychology Professor. I specifically want to teach Abnormal Psychology, Human Sexuality, and Human Development. Additionally I want to continue my work in helping bridge the gap between basic needs and student success. I don’t see myself ever retiring, I believe my soul needs the opportunity and connection required to be an educator to be happy,” she said.
