Maeda and all the tough, orig­i­nal Kodokan gang were ba­si­cally ju­jitsu con­verts who were at home brawl­ing for money with­out UFC rules! Kano, I was told by the older, high-rank­ing sen­sei I met on my trips to Ja­pan, de­vel­oped the judo prin­ci­ples to tame them.

I like the pro­file of the Trudeaus. I was very proud to know [that Justin Trudeau’s] dad was a judo black belt grow­ing up in the ’60s.
