Q&A

IS THERE AN EASY WAY TO LEARN HOW TO USE NEW ELECTRONICS?

-

Don’t try to learn everything at once. Focus on basic functions like how to enter and steer to a waypoint on a chart plotter or set a depth range or gain setting on your fish finder.

Use the read-and-do principle. Go over the manual’s instructions for a specific function, and then perform it several times until you are comfortable with it. Also, use the quick-start guide that often comes with many instruments to become familiar with operating controls and basic functions.

You can ask a friend, dock mate or club member who may have a similar model for assistance on using your electronics.

Manufacturers’ websites often have helpful tutorials, videos and tips that can more easily walk you through equipment operation. Sites such as YouTube often provide a wealth of videos that take you step by step through the operation of many marine electronics models.

In addition, your electronics dealer is a great source for one-on-one training on live showroom equipment or on your boat. —Ken Englert
