5 BOAT-HAULING PICKUPS

WE TESTDRIVE

Boating - - FRONT PAGE - BY JIM HENDRICKS AND RANDY VANCE

Old-school trailer boaters might raise a doubtful eyebrow when they hear of so-called half-ton pickup trucks that today possess tow ratings in excess of 12,000 pounds. But it’s true. Trucks such as the Chevy Silverado 1500, Ford F-150, Nissan Titan, Ram Bighorn 1500 and Toyota Tundra now offer tow ratings that many used to associate only with three-quarter-ton and 1-ton pickups. This is due to a combination of improved power, efficiency and driveline technology. At the same time, the relatively small size, abundant seating and nontowing fuel economy render these vehicles suitable for everyday driving. Perhaps that is what has made half-tons the most popular class of pickups in America. Today’s half-tons are also available with luxury interiors and high-tech features that rival the amenities of first-class sedans or SUVs. But for trailer boaters, it is towing that counts. Here are our impressions of the latest half-tons as delivered to us from today’s five leading truck builders.
