Honda produces some of the quietest four-stroke outboards available, and its variable valve timing, Lean Burn Control to save fuel, and boosted low-speed torque to open the throttle body richen the fuel mixture and advance the ignition timing for a better hole shot, which gives a great balance of power and economy.

Oil and lubricant changes, spark-plug changes, and possibly the accessory belt change can be accomplished by most boaters with common and inexpensive tools, saving some labor costs. Valve inspections are more technically involved, and most boaters don’t attempt them. And though manufacturers prescribe them as part of routine maintenance, dealers who seldom find cause for adjustments often forgo the cost of valve inspection.
