Q: Hi Doc. What can I do about the rub rail on my boat? It is faded and chalky, and I would like it to look good again. Is there a treatment or paint that will last? Eric Simmons Eugene, Oregon

A: You can try some quick-shine sprays, which might provide a day or two of bright color, but basically there is no treatment. The vinyl has been aged and faded by the sun. You can replace it, however, with all the materials needed available from companies such as Taco. For info on how to do the job, see page 32.
