Five tips for a happy hike

1 Hydration is key: Water bottles are fine for shorter walks but hydration packs are useful for longer treks.

2 Pack a change of socks in case the ones you’re wearing get wet. You don’t want to be walking with wet feet, no matter the distance.

3 You don’t need an exhaustive list of extra kit but a light, foldable waterproof jacket is a good idea.

4 Head out early if you can. Even a short walk in the midday sun can be hard work, so try and get out before it gets too warm and stop in the shade over lunch.

5 Have regular breaks as these give you a chance to catch your breath, top up with water and apply sunscreen.
