The Ocean Offers Endless Surprises

Come find out what’s waiting to be discovered

- Leah Biery is the director of communications for Sanibel Sea School.

At Sanibel Sea School, every day is a field trip. Whether it’s mucking through the mangrove mud, snorkeling for sea stars, or learning how to make the most of our islands’ world-class shelling and birdwatching opportunities, there is always a unique adventure in store. Join the marine conservation nonprofit’s team of educators for a day of ocean exploration, and you will leave with lifelong memories and an enhanced appreciation for the underwater world.

The Sea School offers year-round day programs for kids ages 6 to 13 at its flagship campus on Sanibel’s east end, as well as at South Seas Island Resort, Casa Ybel Resort, Sundial Beach Resort & Spa, and Sanibel Moorings. Each program is based on a different marine creature or habitat. Led by knowledgeable, enthusiastic teachers, students might wade out in search of live shells, observe manatees in their natural habitat, or take a surfing lesson while learning about waves. “In this part of the world, we are lucky to have an endless amount of marine life to discover,” said educator Shannon Stainken. “Every day offers new surprises, and that is one of the best things about Sanibel and Captiva.”

Sanibel Sea School also offers regularly scheduled guided beach walks. These family-oriented programs provide a basic introduction to the world-class beachcombing, birding, and wildlife watching opportunities on our islands, and group leaders offer tips to help you make the most of your time while exploring our wildlife sanctuary. Additionally, a variety of private, customizable programs can be arranged for families and groups. “Our goal is to help every visitor create a meaningful, lasting connection with the sea,” said Stainken. “We hope that every person we teach will continue to learn about, explore and love the ocean long after they go home.”
