Samuel Sokol, at 70, of Newton, scientist

Samuel Sokol, of Newton, a vision scientist and neuropsych­ologist, died Sept. 18 at his home. He was 70.

Born in Pittsburgh, Dr. Sokol graduated from Washington & Jefferson College, earned a master’s degree from Bryn Mawr College and a doctorate from Lehigh University.

He worked as a vision scientist for the Department of Ophthalmol­ogy at Tufts, and as a neuropsych­ologist at the Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center since 1994.

He enjoyed jazz, playing piano in jazz ensembles, and competing in marathons and triathlons.

Dr. Sokol is survived by his wife, Heather Edelman; a son, Brad of Burbank, Calif.; a daughter, Jennifer Havican of Franklin; and three grandchild­ren.

Funeral services will be private.
