Wagner repeats at U.S. Championships

-

Ashley Wagner became the first woman since Michelle Kwan in 2005 to win back-to-back titles in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Omaha, Neb., managing to hold off up-and-comer Gracie Gold despite three major mistakes last night.

Wagner was subdued as she waited for her marks, surely thinking she’d blown her chance to repeat. When her score was announced and she saw she was still in first, a look of shock crossed her face.

Wagner finished with 188.84 points, about two ahead of Gold. Gold won the free skate — posting the secondhighest score ever at the U.S. meet, no less. But the 17-year-old had too much ground to make up after a dismal performance Thursday night in the short program left her in ninth place, more than 13 points behind Wagner.

Earlier, Olympic silver medalists and 2011 world champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White won their fifth straight dance title, matching a U.S. record. Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir won the pairs title.

Javier Fernandez became the first Spaniard to win the European figure skating title after an exceptional performance in the men’s free skate in Zagreb, Croatia.

Italy’s Carolina Kostner successfully defended the women’s title, edging 16-year-old Russian Adelina Sotnikova by less than a point to claim her fifth crown.

Names: Tiger, field in a fog

Tiger Woods is going to have to wait to pursue a seventh win at Torrey Pines.

Three players completed one hole before fog wiped out virtually the entire day at the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego. Players are to resume the round this morning and play as long as daylight allows, and then finish tomorrow.

Woods, who had a 2-shot lead over Billy Horschel, never came to the golf course. . . .

Chris Wood eagled the 18th hole to win the Qatar Masters for his first European Tour victory, overtaking Sergio Garcia and George Coetzee who finished a shot back in Doha. . . .

Baylor’s Brittney Griner broke the NCAA career record for blocks (both genders), recording her 664th during the top-ranked Bears’ 82-65 win over No. 20 Oklahoma in Waco, Texas. . . .

Florida State’s E.J. Manuel passed for a touchdown and rushed for another on the South’s first two drives in a 21-16 victory over the North in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. . . .

Reliever David Robertson will earn $3.1 million under his one-year contract with the New York Yankees.

Misc.: Vonn triumphant

Lindsey Vonn beat rival Tina Maze on the Slovenian’s home snow and in her best discipline, earning a surprising victory in a giant slalom in Maribor.

Vonn proved again that she is back to her best after an illness by putting down two good runs to win in 2 minutes, 22.2 seconds. . . .

Luton became the first nonleague team in 24 years to beat topflight opposition in the FA Cup as it defeated Norwich, 1-0, in the fourth round, while thirdtier club MK Dons dropped Premier League struggler Queens Park Rangers, 4-2.
