Dad: Victim was headed to rehab
The heartbroken father of a 28-year-old Hyannis woman who was found fatally stabbed and shot at a rest stop on a Cape Cod highway early Saturday morning said yesterday his “baby girl” was battling drug addiction and was due to report for rehab today.
“She was involved in drugs. We’ve been fighting many years as I tried to tell her to stop,” said Antonio Ferreira, 70, father of Christine Ferreira, who was identified by authorities as the Hyannis woman whose body was found stabbed and shot about 4:15 a.m. Saturday at the highway rest area between exits 6 and 7 on the eastbound side of Route 6. A passing driver alerted police to the woman’s body, authorities said.
Antonio Ferreira spoke with the Herald by phone through tears yesterday, explaining how he had picked up his daughter from New Bedford last week and how she was planning on going into rehab today.
“She promised me that she was going to take it seriously this time,” he said. “She gave me a kiss and said, ‘Daddy, I love you.’ ”
Ferreira said Christine was the youngest of his four children. He referred to her as his “baby girl.”
“She was a very good person, very kind. Very kind to everybody. Everybody loved her. I will miss her very much,” he said.
Two Barnstable police detectives spoke with Ferreira yesterday morning at his Hyannis home, he said. But they didn’t divulge much more than telling him investigators were working the case hard, he said.
“I have no idea what happened. I have no idea who might have done it. … She got involved with the wrong people.”
Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe said yesterday in a statement Christine Ferreira “died from multiple stabbing injuries and multiple gunshot wounds. The case remains under active investigation by state police detectives assigned to the district attorney’s office and Barnstable police.” O’Keefe’s office was awaiting further information from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
