A California man who drowned in Quincy was trying to untangle a mooring when he failed to resurface Saturday night, while a Boston man drowned in Littleton after going canoeing by himself at night, authorities said.

Witnesses said Jesse Loubier, 32, of California entered the water off the Clipper Marina in Quincy in order to free the boat from an entangled line, Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey said in a statement.

Witnesses said Loubier surfaced from his initial dive but went back underwater after failing to untangle the line, and didn’t resurface that time, Morrissey said. His body was pulled from the water Saturday night.

In a separate incident, Littleton police Chief Matthew J. King announced yesterday in a statement a 23-year-old Boston man’s body was found near Fort Pond’s shoreline Saturday night.

The identity of the deceased man was not released.

Cops said they began receiving calls of a missing canoeist on Fort Pond about 9:30 p.m. Saturday night. The man went canoeing by himself about 7 p.m. and never returned, cops said.

The man was found about 20 to 30 feet from shore.

“This is a tragic ending to a holiday weekend adventure,” King said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families involved, and we ask everyone to remain extra vigilant as their weekend continues.”
