FBI Director James B. Comey announced yesterday that the agency won’t be recommendi­ng criminal charges for Hillary Clinton’s handling of highly classified material in a private email account. Here’s a look back at how the scandal unfolded:

2009

JAN. 21: Clinton confirmed as secretary of state. MARCH 18: Clinton starts using private email address. Oct. 9: Federal rule issued about government workers saving emails.

2012

• APRIL 9: 2011 photo of Clinton using BlackBerry sparks questions at State Department over private email.

2013

FEB. 1: Clinton resigns as secretary of state.

MARCH 20: Hacker known as Guccifer releases emails showing Clinton using private email address.

2014

• MAY 8: The House Select Committee on Benghazi is formed to investigat­e what Clinton knew during the Sept. 11, 2012, attack on the U.S. embassy in Benghazi, Libya.

• DEC. 5: Clinton provides the congressio­nal Benghazi panel with 30,000 emails.

2015

• MARCH: Reports reveal Clinton exclusivel­y used private server housed in Chappaqua, N.Y.

• JULY 23: Inspectors general ask Department of Justice for an investigat­ion into Clinton's email use.

• AUG. 11: FBI takes custody of Clinton's server.

• AUG. 23: Clinton takes responsibi­lity for private server and says it “clearly wasn't the best choice.”

• OCT. 22: Clinton gives 11 hours of testimony before the Benghazi committee.

2016

JAN. 14: Inspector general of intelligen­ce community says some Clinton emails were classified above “top secret.”

MAY 25: State Department Inspector General's audit of Clinton's private email use says server had been hacked and system was never authorized. JUNE 27: Bill Clinton speaks with Attorney General Loretta Lynch on tarmac at Phoenix airport.

JULY 2: Hillary Clinton is interviewe­d by FBI investigat­ors for 3 1⁄ hours at the bureau's 2 headquarte­rs in Washington, D.C.
