Nowitzki to re-up with Mavericks

-

Dirk Nowitzki’s new contract will give the Dallas Mavericks star a chance to spend 20 seasons with the only franchise he has ever played for. The Mavericks and Nowitzki reached agreement on a twoyear, $40 million contract, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity yesterday because NBA contracts can’t be signed until tomorrow. Nowitzki will have a player option in the second year.

The person also said the Mavericks agreed to a two-year, $6 million contract with free agent Seth Curry, the younger brother of two-time MVP Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors.

At $20 million per season, Nowitzki’s deal is a significant raise for the 38-year-old, who opted out of the final year of a threeyear, $25 million deal that was a huge discount for the Mavericks.

The Los Angeles Lakers’ Kobe Bryant was just the fifth player in NBA history to reach 20 seasons and he retired in April as the only one so far to do it all with one team. Tim Duncan is considering whether to return for a 20th season in San Antonio with the Spurs.

Dallas is set to add Harrison Barnes on a max deal at four years and $94 million, and Andrew Bogut is expected to arrive via trade. Barnes and Bogut became expendable for Golden State.

West a Warrior

A source told the AP that David West is headed to Golden State on a oneyear deal to try to land that elusive championship. He will play for the veteran’s minimum of $1.5 million.

The two sides came to agreement a day after top free agent prize Kevin Durant chose to go to the Warriors. West, a 13-year pro, has never won a title and signed with San Antonio last summer in an attempt to grab a ring.

Hornets reload

Free agents Roy Hibbert and Ramon Sessions agreed to terms with the Charlotte Hornets, a source told the AP. Hibbert will receive one-year deal worth $5 million and Sessions will get a two-year deal worth $12.3 million with a team option for the second season. . . .

According to an AP source, San Antonio traded Boris Diaw to the Utah Jazz for Boston College product Olivier Hanlan.

Wiz add assistants

Sidney Lowe and Tony Brown were hired as assistants to coach Scott Brooks with the Washington Wizards. Chad Iske, Mike Terpstra and Maz Trakh also will have roles on Brooks’ staff. . . .

The Memphis Grizzlies hired Keith Smart and Adam Mazarei to bench roles as assistants to coach David Fizdale.
