When Nantucket made the trip to West Bridgewater yesterday, the Whalers knew they were heading into a hostile environment — facing a Mayflower League rival that was hosting its first home game in three years.

The Whalers were not intimidated, however. Junior Alex Small rushed for 64 yards and two touchdowns, and senior Travis Demby added 131 yards on the ground as Nantucket ran away with a 30-0 victory.

“The main focus was to keep our minds on the game,” Whalers coach Brian Ryder said. “We knew that we’d have a little bit of a delay with the field dedication ceremony, and I just didn’t want the kids to lose their edge during that whole time.”

After West Bridgewater (2-1, 0-1) finished dedicating Robert M. Dwyer Jr. Stadium, the Whalers set the tone when Demby returned the opening kickoff to the Wildcats’ 14-yard line.

After Cameron Bartlett’s 32-yard field goal opened the scoring, quarterback Jack Holdgate gave the Whalers (3-0, 1-0) a 9-0 lead with a 14-yard run. JT Gamberoni broke off a 53-yard scoring romp, and Small ran for two points to make it 17-0 in the second quarter.

Small’s first touchdown of the day, a 1-yard plunge, made it 23-0 at the break. His last TD was on a 17-yard run in the final quarter.

“We really wanted to start off strong,” Demby said. “Everyone did what they needed to do on and off the field, and that’s what separated us this week.
