The largest schools in the state will not get an opportunity to vie for a Super Bowl title at Gillette Stadium. Neither will the smallest schools for that matter.

The MIAA Football Committee voted 19-0 yesterday in favor of moving the Division 1 and 4A Super Bowls away from Gillette Stadium. The move was made necessary when the football committee expanded from six to eight divisions in the latest realignment, thus creating a scheduling logjam.

While some venues were tossed about as potential sites, the MIAA said nothing was finalized. As a concession, the two games that won’t be played at Gillette will use the normal 11-minute quarters and a full complement of timeouts.

The proposal was put forth by MIAA assistant executive director Richard Pearson.

“We discussed what the options were for our association,” Pearson said. “We thought taking the largest and small (divisions) was the fairest thing to do. It was the best thing we can do.”

In other football-related matters, the committee voted 19-0 in favor of an adjusted factor used to determine which divisions the urban schools, the private schools, the co-op schools and vocational schools belonged in. The sub-committee looked at school enrollment as well as participation numbers in making a final determination as to which division a school belonged in.

“We looked back and saw the kind of things that people appealed before, the kind of things came up for discussion,” said committee member Jim O’Leary of St. John’s Prep. “We just subjectively put a value on what would make sense and placed teams in a reasonable spots not too far from where they’ve been before.”
