Frelick arrives with Lexington

Rare Minutemen win in Reading

- By SEAN BRENNAN

READING — Sal Frelick may have jumped ahead of Paul Revere in Lexington folklore last night after the junior quarterback put on a show for the Minutemen against perennial Middlesex League power Reading.

Frelick ran for more than 250 yards, scored five rushing touchdowns and threw for another score as Lexington romped the Rockets, 5627, at Hollingsworth Field.

For the Minutemen, it was their first win in 13 years at Reading.

“We had our mind set after last Friday’s win over Woburn that we were going to come into Reading and beat them,” said Frelick who committed to play baseball at Boston College during his freshman year. “(Reading) brought pressure up the middle and it opened up the outside for the scramble game tonight.”

Frelick got the scoring started on Lexington’s first possession, leading the Minuteman on a nine-play drive that he finished off with a 30-yard touchdown pass to senior Spencer Kendall. Duncan Hewitt’s kick made it 7-0.

And after the Lexington defense recovered a fumble, junior running back Ben Quint (interception return for a touchdown) ran for a 45yard score to put the Minutemen up 13-0 just four minutes into the contest.

The Rockets, however, responded by scoring the game’s next 21 points courtesy of junior Jack Geiger.

First Geiger returned a kickoff 95 yards for score to make it 13-7. After a threeand-out from Lexington, Geiger’s 4-yard touchdown run leveled the score at 13 apiece heading into the second quarter.

On Reading’s next possession, Geiger followed up a 40-yard run by senior quarterback Corey DiLoreto with an 8-yard TD run, which along with a twopoint conversion put Reading (2-2) up by a 21-13 margin.

Then Frelick rode into town.

His 4-yard TD run and conversion rush made it 2121, and his 52-yard scoring run up the middle on the next possession gave Lexington (4-0) a 28-21 lead. DiLoreto connected with Geiger on a 27-yard scoring pass to cut the deficit to 2827 at the break.

Frelick’s 40-yard run pushed the Lexington lead to 35-27, and after Quint stepped in front of a pass and brought it back for a score to make it 42-27, Frelick’s 79-yard TD run on the first play of the fourth quarter put the game away. Frelick capped off his night with a late, 8-yard scoring run to finish the scoring.

“This is the biggest win we’ve had since I’ve been here,” said Lexington coach George Peterson. “Reading has ruled the league for years. We talked about taking advantage of an opportunity after starting 3-0 and we delivered that message today.”
