DRIVER CITED IN FIRE ENGINE CRASH
Motorist drove into intersection
A driver has been cited for failing to stop for a fire engine in a domino-effect crash in the Back Bay Monday morning that sent four firefighters to the hospital and damaged numerous parked luxury cars, police said.
Witnesses told police the driver of a Chevrolet Equinox failed to stop for the fire engine flashing its lights and sounding its siren in the crash at Dartmouth Street and Commonwealth Avenue Monday.
“All witnesses interviewed stated approx the same version of the accident, that is (Equinox) drove into the path of … Boston fire truck which did have emergency lights and sirens activated as it drove down Commonwealth Ave causing the fire engine to collide with (Equinox), then the tree and the first parked car,” a police report stated.
The fire truck, which was responding to a report of smoke at 1120 Boylston St., was traveling west on Commonwealth Avenue at 11:26 a.m. when it collided with the Equinox heading north on Dartmouth Street.
Police said the driver told them, “While stopped at red signal at intersection he heard siren but did not see emergency vehicles. He thought they were behind him so he pulled into the intersection to make way when he was struck by BFD fire engine.”
The name of the cited driver was not released because he was hospitalized and treated as a victim, police said.
The fire engine driver told police he saw the Equinox and tried to avoid it but the SUV did not stop and drove into the fire engine’s path.
Eleven cars were damaged in the crash including a 2013 Audi A4, A 2010 Mercedes-Benz C 300, a 2016 Land Rover, and a 2013 BMW X5. A large tree was destroyed, the report said.
