Leo C. Turner Sr., at 97, of Melrose, WWII veteran
Leo C. Turner Sr. of Melrose, an army veteran, died at Aberjona Nursing Center in Winchester on Friday, five days prior to his wife, Margaret E. (Lux), dying yesterday. He was 97.
Mr. Turner was born and raised in Melrose.
He graduated from Melrose High School in 1938.
He served in the Army during World War II.
Mr. Turner worked for the B&M Railroad for more than 40 years before retiring in 1979.
He played hockey in the junior Olympics and played semipro baseball. He was inducted into the Melrose High School Hall of Fame. Mr. Turner was also a member of the Mount Hood Park Commission for 20 years.
He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing at the Mount Hood Golf Course in Melrose. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife and spending winters in Boynton Beach, Fla..
Mr. Turner is survived by three daughters, Kathleen Devir of New Hampshire, Cindy Lux of Brighton and Robin McDonald of Wrentham; a son, Michael of Melrose; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today at Incarnation Church, Melrose.
Burial with military honors will be in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
