BC stays hot, tops Arizona St.

No. 3 Boston College extended its winning streak to 10 games after Colin White and David Cotton tallied power-play goals yesterday in a 3-1 victory against Arizona State at Kelley Rink in men’s hockey action.

Cotton’s tally gave the Eagles (10-2-1) a 2-1 lead early in the second period and Chris Calnan added an insurance goal with 2:53 remaining.

Ryan Edquist stopped 23 shots in the win and Ryan Fitzgerald added two assists.

The Sun Devils are now 2-9-0.

UMass-Lowell 4, Maine 1— Dylan Zink logged three assists as the No. 5 River Hawks (7-3-2, 3-1-0 Hockey East) dropped the Black Bears (4-6-2, 1-3-0) in Lowell.

Tyler Wall recorded 20 saves in the win.

Northeaste­rn 0, Notre Dame 0, susp. — The teams played 40 minutes before a Zamboni malfunctio­n damaged the ice during the second intermissi­on. The game will be resumed at a later date if scheduling allows.

Merrimack 3, New Hampshire 3 — Jason Salvaggio scored for the Wildcats (45-2, 2-1-1 Hockey East) with 48 seconds left in regulation to earn a tie with the Warriors (4-5-3, 0-2-3) in Durham, N.H.

Hampus Gustafsson notched a goal and an assist for Merrimack.

Men’s basketball

South Carolina 81, Holy Cross 49 — Sindarius Thornwell scored 20 points off four 3-pointers to lead the Gamecocks (2-0) against the Crusaders (0-1) in Columbia, S.C.

Holy Cross used its Princeton-style offense — coach Bill Carmody used to coach at the Ivy League school — of cuts and backdoor layups to get within 29-24 on Matt Husek’s basket with 7:09 left in the half. That’s when the Gamecocks took off on a 15-5 run over the next six minutes to push their lead to 44-29.

The Crusaders never got closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

PJ Dozier had 15 points for South Carolina. Robert Champion led Holy Cross with 18 points.

Yale 98, Washington 90 — In Seattle, Miye Oni scored 24 points, Sam Downey added 22 and the Bulldogs turned back a furious second-half rally to hold off the Huskies in the season opener for both teams.

Seton Hall 82, Central Conn. 58 — Khadeen Carrington made four 3-pointers and scored 18 points, Angel Delgado had 14 points and 16 rebounds, and the Pirates (20) drubbed the Blue Devils (1-1) in Newark, N.J.

Mustafa Jones led CCSU with 11 points.

Brown 88, Niagara 79 — Steven Spieth had a careerhigh 27 points and nine assists, and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Bears (1-1) toppled the Purple Eagles (0-2) in Providence.

Amer. Inter. 71, Holy Family 68 — Juwan Moody hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 3 seconds to play as the Yellow Jackets (1-1) topped the Tigers (0-2) in Bridgeport, Conn.

Jayvon Pitts-Young led the Jackets with 17 points. In top 25 action: Kentucky 93, Canisius 69 — Isaiah Briscoe and De’Aaron Fox each scored a career-high 21 points, Malik Monk added 16 and the No. 2 Wildcats (2-0) pulled away from the Golden Griffins (01) in Lexington, Ky.

Briscoe was 9-of-13 from the floor to help Kentucky rally from a seven-point first-half deficit to build a 44-35 halftime advantage.

Kentucky shot 51 percent from the field.

North Carolina 97, Chattanoog­a 57 — Joel Berry II scored 18 points to help the sixth-ranked Tar Heels (2-0) rout the Mocs (1-1) in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Kennedy Meeks added 14 points and 12 rebounds for UNC, which has won 15 straight home openers.

Women’s soccer

Clemson 1, Northeaste­rn 0 — Shannon Horgan netted the lone goal as the Tigers (14-4-3) blanked the Huskies (14-7-1) in openingrou­nd NCAA tournament action in Clemson, S.C. NU’s 14 wins is the secondmost in school history.
