A 30-year-old Malden man told a woman “she should not have voted for Hillary Clinton” before exposing himself to her while aboard an overnight Orange Line train, MBTA police said yesterday.

James Sacchetti was released on his own recognizance after his arraignment yesterday in West Roxbury District Court on a charge of open and gross lewdness. The incident at Forest Hills Station in Jamaica Plain began when Sacchetti broached the subject of “recent elections” with a woman shortly after midnight yesterday, court documents said.

Sacchetti “started a conversation with her related to the recent elections, mentioning that she should not have voted for Hillary Clinton, and she responded to him stating ... ‘her vote is her vote,’’’ cops said. “After a few more words of conversation, the suspect stood up from his seat, unbuckled his belt, lowered his jeans and shorts and exposed his penis to the victim, as she was shocked to observe his behavior.”

Police said the woman’s coworker also saw Sacchetti drop his pants and expose himself on the train.

MBTA police Superintendent Richard Sullivan said yesterday, “We understand the current atmosphere of the country. Some people harbor deep divisions. However, behavior such as this, regardless of one’s political affiliations, will not be tolerated. We will work closely with the district attorney’s office to see that this person is prosecuted and held responsible for his conduct.”

Sacchetti was ordered by the court yesterday to stay away from the victim and witness, not abuse the victim and to stay away from the Forest Hills Station unless he is on his way to court.

Police, after a brief search, found Sacchetti in an exit stairway at the north end of the station where he was arrested, police said.

His next court date is slated for March.
