This rally on Common is one we can all support

-

Finally, a rally on the Common with no political agenda.

Patriots fans will descend on the streets of Boston to cheer on their Super Bowl champs today for the fifth time under the leadership of Tom Brady.

Politics will take a backseat in an otherwise polarizing climate. In the Donald Trump era, the Common and State House have been a constant site for protesting against the president and his policies.

Patriots fans will try and ignore the fact that their favorite quarterback is friends with Trump, the team’s owner attended the inauguration and coach Bill Belichick supported him.

Remember that letter from Belichick that Trump read at a rally in New Hampshire just before the election? Belichick wrote, “Congratulations on a tremendous campaign. ... Your leadership is amazing. I have always had tremendous respect for you but the toughness and perseverance you have displayed over the past year is remarkable. Hopefully tomorrow’s election, the results will give the opportunity to make America great again.”

The head coach obviously had to explain such a letter considering his home state is about as blue as they come.

“I write hundreds of letters and notes every month,” Belichick said. “(It) doesn’t mean I agree with every single thing that every person thinks about politics, religion or other subjects. I have multiple friendships that are important to me. That’s what that was about ... Our friendship goes back many years and I think anybody that’s spent more than five minutes with me knows I’m not a political person. The comments are not politically motivated, I have a friendship and loyalty to Donald.”

Brady swore off politics once the media got wind of his relationship with Trump. He told reporters, “Talk to my wife. She said I can’t talk about politics any more.”

So, apparently it is still possible for pro-Trumpers to get some love in this city. Most likely today’s crowd will be much larger than the Women’s March, where more than 100,000 protesters rallied against the president.

Comedian Bill Maher certainly holds the Trump connection against the team. “The Falcons are playing a team where the owner, the coach and the star quarterback all love Donald Trump,” he said. “So I’d really like for them to lose by a score of a million (expletive) thousand to none.”

Funny, considering the historic win.

Let’s just hope no knuckleheads try and dampen this celebratory day — just leave those political signs at home.
