O’Connell nets big goal again for BC High

Junior forward Danny O’Connell scored his second game-winning goal in as many outings to spark BC High to a 3-1 victory over Arlington last night at UMass-Boston’s Clark Athletic Center.

“Danny definitely has a hot stick,” Eagles coach John Flaherty said. “He can shoot the puck. When he gets open shots, he’s pretty dangerous.”

O’Connell, who also netted the winner Saturday against Malden Catholic, broke a 1-1 tie with the Spy Ponders at 10:07 of the third period. His wrister beat goalie Jack Pinard low to the blocker side as BC High (10-1-4) took control of this game with Super Eight implications. The Spy Ponders are No. 3 in Division 1 and the Eagles are ranked seventh.

Thomas Kramer added an empty-net goal to seal the deal.

Arlington opened the scoring early in the second period when Kevin Ouellette fired a wrist shot into the top left corner past Eagles goalie Luke Garrity. BC High tied it up later in the period when Blake Graham circled the net and snuck a wraparound past Pinard.

Arlington (13-2-1) carried the play to open the third period, but a penalty halted any momentum and put the Eagles on the power play. BC didn’t score, but got a kick start on offense and O’Connell scored the decisive goal just after the power play expired.

“We got some good looks, some good chances,” Flaherty said. “The next shift over, maybe there was a little bit of confusion and we were able to take advantage of it.”
