Cathedral’s Cheek putting on a show

-

Calvin Cheek knew he had a game for the ages but didn’t realize the damage until later that night.

The 5-foot-9 Cathedral High guard torched highly-touted Cardinal Spellman to the tune of 31 points, 11 steals, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in an 8378 victory.

“I didn’t even know about it right away,” Cheek said. “One of my friends sent it to me on social media and asked if it was true. I started thinking about it and thought it might be true.”

Cheek is far from a one-hit wonder. The senior standout is nearly averaging a triple-double on the season with 17 points, 12 assists and almost nine steals a game for a 12-5 team which has defeated St. John’s Prep, Spellman and St. Mary’s.

“I think he turned himself into an elite point guard,” said first-year Cathedral coach Larry Merritt, a former standout at the school. “He controls the game, he’s been a leader for his team. His assist-to-turnover ratio is almost 4-1. He’s one of our leading rebounders and he’s always getting 7-10 steals a game.”

Cheek was a regular for a Cathedral team which captured the Division 4 South title, and now has blossomed into a takecharge guy.

“I needed to become more of a point guard and a vocal leader,” Cheek said. “I’m trying to set an example for my teammates both on and off the floor. I want to make everyone else better. I like to get them involved in the game, that’s the main thing for me now.”

The Cardinal Spellman game is just one of many eye-opening performances for Cheek. He tortured St. John’s Prep for 23 points, 10 steals and seven assists in a victory, and scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a win over archnemesis St. Mary’s.

“We talked about things before the Cardinal Spellman game,” Merritt said. “We just tell him that this is his last year and that every game is an audition. He was just amazing that night. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a high school kid getting a quadruple-double.” Do you have a similar story in your community?
