New Mission tips O’Bryant

No. 12 New Mission followed a familiar script in yesterday’ s Boston City League boys basketball match up against eighthrank­ed O’ Bryant.

“Traditiona­lly we (make) that one run and hang on for dear life ,” New Mission coach Cory McCarthy s aid. “T hat was it. I knew they were going to come back.”

After the Titans opened a double-digit lead thanks to a 15-2 third-quarter run, O’Bryant did come back.

But the rally ran out of steam late in the fourth quarter as New Mission hung on to win, 68-62.

After Rivaldo Soares (20 points ,10 rebounds) tied the game ,43-43, for the Tigers early in the third quarter, New Mission (123, 6-0) took control.

Back-to-back baskets by Kevin Nunez, who score date am-high 20 points, got the spurt started, and Char les Mitchell (14 points) followed by draining a 3-pointer.

Alexander Delarosa kept the run going by sinking a pair of free throws and a nifty up and-under move before Nunez punctuated with another buck et f or a 5845 lead with 2:27 to go.

The Titans opened their largest lead ,65-48, on another 3-point er from Mitchell early in the fourth before O’ Bryant (14-4, 5-1) stormed back.

The Tigers went on a 12-0 run behind Romario Ebanks (nine points) and Emmanuel Exilhomme (16) to get within 65-60 with 2:06 remaining.

But Delarosa, who finished with 19 points, hit a critical baseline jumper the next time up the floor to st op O’Bry ant’s run and secure a win.

“I’ve al ways been on Alex for years about finishing in the clutch ,” Mc- Carthy said .“And he really killed their run with that baseline jumper.”

In a Bay State Conference battle, Eddie Has sell led the way with 21 points and hit the game-winning shot at the buzz er as Milton (10-6) won a thriller against Braintree, 60-58.

Junior Mohamed Traore continued his great season with 30 points as Matignon (15-2) clinched the Catholic Central League title with a 74-59 win against Lowell Catholic. . . . Travon Ford scored a game-high 37 points to pace Pope John (10-6) to an 80-54 win against Austin Prep.

Girls basketball

In the Middlese x League, Hale y Lightbody led all scorers with 2 2 points as Reading (1 4-5) captured its ninth straight victory, a 58- 52 win against Woburn.

In the C ape Ann League, Tully Walsh had 11 points and 13 rebounds and Liz Kirschner chipped in with 11 boards and six steals to lift Hamilton(10-7) past Ipswich, 49-35.

Joie Gr assi sc ored 1 5 points as Plymouth North (11-7) edg ed Quincy, 4441, in the Patriot League.

In the N ortheaster­n Conference, Paris Wilkey, Jeyley Madrano and Soneta Srey combined for 39 points to lead Lynn Classical (1 5-5) p ast Beverly, 47-46. . . . Nene Onwuogu had a double-double with 13 points and 17 rebounds as Peabody (12- 5) topped Lynn English, 39-35.
