Ryan plan lacking
U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan’s health proposal, which was defeated a week ago, would have taken health care away from 24 million people across the country, according to the Congressional Budget Office (“Trump, Ryan fail to deliver health care bill,” March 25).
His plan would also have had an adverse affect on Medicare, which I rely on. It would have undercut the Medicare hospital fund, while giving a huge tax break just to people earning more than $200,000 a year.
In addition, his proposed cuts to Medicaid would have wrecked the Massachusetts budget.
For its part, the Affordable Care Act expanded Medicaid coverage to some 11 million more people, in the 31 states that took advantage of the legislation. That’s because more low-income people were allowed into the program.
Ryan’s plan would have phased out or undermined this Obamacare success.
In sum, Ryan’s plan would have harmed millions of people. And Obamacare does a better job insuring people than previously. — Robert D. Donovan, Lynn
