- By LAUREL J. SWEET

Two men will be arraigned today on charges that they raped and beat a Lynn man nearly to death.

The 48-year-old man underwent surgery yesterday at Massachusetts General Hospital and was in critical condition, according to Lynn police Lt. James Shorten.

“Everybody knows each other,” Shorten said of the situation. “It’s complicated.”

Darrin Stephens, 50, and John Michelin, 31, both of Lynn, are due to be arraigned today in Lynn District Court on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and aggravated rape, Shorten said.

Shorten said Stephens and Michelin were still at the home when police arrived shortly after midnight yesterday. He said there had been some type of gathering, though not necessarily a party.

He said police did not immediately know the motive for the assault.

Shorten said police suspect the victim was clubbed with a baseball bat. A bat was recovered at the scene, he said.
