A Peabody man was killed Saturday night in a three-vehicle pileup on Interstate 95 north in Boxford that state police say he caused by speeding and crossing into oncoming traffic.

Michael Espinola, 38, was pronounced dead at Beverly Hospital following the collision at approximately 9:52 p.m. Saturday.

Troopers came upon the crash while responding to numerous 911 calls that two cars were racing on I-95 south.

Police did not immediately say whether Espinola’s BMW was one of those vehicles.

Police said Espinola, while traveling southbound on I-95 in a 1997 BMW convertible, crossed into oncoming northbound traffic and struck a 2012 Acura MDX and a 2009 Honda Civic.

A man and woman in the Acura, both 64, from North Hampton, N.H., and a 43-year-old Georgetown woman with a 12-year-old girl in the Honda all suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett’s office is assisting with the investigation.
