Souza’s Rays slide by Jays

Steven Souza Jr. hit a three-run homer and was involved in a scrum after a slide during the Tampa Bay Rays’ 7-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in American League play yesterday in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Corey Dickerson and Jesus Sucre also homered, and Jake Odorizzi (1-1) went six effective innings for the Rays, who took 3-of-4 in the series. Tampa Bay has won 23 of its last 30 home series against the Blue Jays, going 61-33 during that stretch.

Toronto got a home run from Josh Donaldson, who left after grounding out in the sixth with right calf tightness, but dropped to 1-5.

Both benches emptied in the second when Blue Jays shortstop Troy Tulowitzki took issue with Souza’s slide into second base on a double-play grounder. No punches were thrown.

Rangers 8, Athletics 1 — In Arlington, Texas, Joey Gallo homered and had a career-high five RBI, Robinson Chirinos had a two-run homer and a bases-loaded walk, and Martin Perez (1-1) and Texas topped Oakland.

Angels 10, Mariners 9 — In Anaheim, Calif., Albert Pujols homered and had a tying two-run single in the ninth inning before Cliff Pennington’s drive to the wall ended Los Angeles’ comeback win over Seattle.

Twins 4, White Sox 1 — Miguel Sano and Jorge Polanco homered to back six scoreless innings from Ervin Santana (2-0) as visiting Minnesota socked Chicago, whose Jose Quintana (0-2) took the loss.

Mets 5, Marlins 2 — Noah Syndergaar­d (1-0) blistered visiting Miami for nine strikeouts in seven innings, allowing the two runs on five hits, and Jay Bruce and Michael Conforto homered off Edinson Volquez (0-1) for New York in the victory.

Giants 5, Padres 3 — Hunter Pence and Buster Posey hit consecutiv­e homers, and Johnny Cueto (2-0) struck out seven in seven innings, helping San Francisco beat Clayton Richard (1-1) and host San Diego to avoid a series sweep.

Phillies 4, Nationals 3 — Cesar Hernandez’ RBI single with two outs in the ninth let host Philadelph­ia walk off Washington, whose Ryan Zimmerman tied the game with a pinch-hit, three-run homer with two outs in the top of the inning.

Cubs 7, Brewers 4 — Addison Russell hit a two-run double and Jason Heyward had a two-run triple in the first inning, and Kyle Schwarber and Ben Zobrist homered, as visiting Chicago beat Milwaukee.

Pirates 6, Braves 5 — Starling Marte hit a two-run home run in the 10th inning, giving host Pittsburgh a walkoff win against Atlanta, which had taken the lead in the extra frame on an RBI groundout.

Reds 8, Cardinals 0 — Scott Feldman (1-1) threw six scoreless innings, and Adam Duvall homered among his three hits, as Cincinnati beat up on Carlos Martinez (0-10 and host St. Louis.

Dodgers 10, Rockies 6 — In Denver, Corey Seager hit a two-run homer and Los Angeles scored seven runs with two outs to avoid being swept by Colorado.
