EX-DOC HOSPITAL RAMPAGE

At least one dead in Bronx mass shooting

- By BRIAN DOWLING

A disgraced doctor forced out of a Bronx hospital by sexual harassment accusations returned with an AR-15 hidden in a lab coat to shoot seven people, killing at least one, before turning the gun on himself, police said.

“One doctor is dead,” New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a press conference outside the Bronx-Lebanon hospital. “There are several doctors who are fighting for their lives right now, among those who are wounded.”

“The shooter killed himself, but not before doing horrible damage,” de Blasio said. “This was a horrible situation unfolding in a place that people associated with care and comfort, a situation that came out of nowhere.”

The gunman, Dr. Henry Bello, a family medicine physician, shot himself trying to set himself on fire. He staggered, bleeding, into a hallway where he collapsed and died with the rifle at his side, police said.

Bello resigned from the hospital in 2015 in the wake of sexual harassment allegations, officials said. In 2004, he pleaded guilty to carrying a woman off, saying, “You’re coming with me.” In 2009 he was arrested for looking up women’s skirts with a mirror.

Police responding yesterday afternoon to a 911 call of a shooting at the hospital went floor-by-floor, guns drawn, before learning Bello was dead inside the building after shooting up the medical facility. Officials said he may have doused himself with an accelerant like gasoline and tried to set himself on fire before shooting himself.

One female doctor was killed and six other people were wounded, five of them seriously, according to NYC police Commissioner James O’Neill. The patients were treated in the emergency room at Bronx-Lebanon.

A surgeon at the hospital said all six victims were in critical condition, but they were expected to survive the gunshot wounds they sustained to the head, chest and abdomen. The most seriously wounded was shot in the liver.

A former colleague described Bello as a problematic employee.

Bello “was very aggressive, talking loudly, threatening people. All the time he was a problem,” said Dr. David Lazala, a family medicine doctor who said he trained Bello at Bronx-Lebanon.

He said Bello, who worked at night as a doctor, sent him a threatening email after he was fired.
