Brett Gardner tied a career-high with six RBI and his seventh-inning grand slam helped the New York Yankees cruise to a 13-4 victory over the Astros last night in Houston.

The Yankees finally broke through in the sixth inning, collecting five hits — all singles — and sending 10 batters to the plate to take a 6-3 lead.

Yankees starter Michael Pineda yielded seven hits and three runs (two earned) in six innings for his first win since June 8. Bryan Mitchell allowed two hits and one run in three innings for his first save.

Rays 6, Orioles 4 — Adeiny Hechavarri­a hit a tying single in the ninth inning and Steven Souza followed with a three-run homer in the 10th to carry Tampa Bay past host Baltimore.

Hechavarri­a went 4-for4 and Wilson Ramos hit his first homer with the Rays. They had nobody on with two outs in the ninth before rallying from a 3-2 deficit against closer Brad Brach.

Royals 8, Twins 1— In Kansas City, Mo., Jason Vargas picked up his American League-leading 12th victory, Eric Hosmer hit a three-run homer and Kansas City defeated Minnesota.

Vargas (12-3) tied Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers for the major league lead in wins and lowered his ERA to 2.22, which tops the AL.

Mariners 10, Angels 0 — In Anaheim, Calif., Robinson Cano hit two home runs, Ariel Miranda allowed only two hits in seven innings as Seattle beat Los Angeles to snap a four-game losing streak.

White Sox 8, Rangers 7 — Melky Cabrera hit a two-run double against closer Matt Bush to cap a three-run ninth inning and give host Chicago the win over Texas.

Tigers-Indians, ppd. — Detroit and visiting Cleveland were rained out, and the game won’t be made up until Sept. 1 as part of a split doublehead­er.

Interleagu­e

Braves 3, Athletics 1 — Mike Foltynewic­z lost his no-hit bid for Atlanta when Matt Olson clobbered a fullcount pitch into the elevated right-field seats leading off the ninth inning, but the visitors still held on to win in Oakland.

Foltynewic­z struck out eight and walked four while pitching into the ninth for the first time and outdueling Sonny Gray.

National League

Cardinals 8, Nationals 1 — Mike Leake pitched eight strong innings and Yadier Molina drove in four runs to help host St. Louis beat Washington. The Cards have won five of their past six.

Mets 2, Phillies 1 — Jacob deGrom struck out 12 in seven dominant innings to win his fourth consecutiv­e start as host New York edged Philadelph­ia.

Reds 5, Cubs 0 — Scott Feldman held Chicago’s depleted lineup to two singles over seven innings, and Adam Duvall hit a three-run homer, powering host Cincinnati to a victory.

Giants 13, Pirates 5 — Hunter Pence drove in four runs and visiting San Francisco pounced on Pittsburgh starter Gerrit Cole for seven runs then added six more against the bullpen to win in a rout.

Rockies 6, Diamondbac­ks 3— In Phoenix, Jon Gray struck out 10 over six innings in his first start since April and rookie Raimel Tapia hit his first career home run, helping Colorado beat Arizona to end an eight-game skid.

Brewers 3, Marlins 2 — Stephen Vogt, claimed off waivers earlier in the week, hit two home runs as host Milwaukee held off Miami.

Elsewhere in baseball — A ball apparently thrown from the stands at Miller Park in Milwaukee struck first-base umpire Joe West directly in the back of the head, leading to a sevenminut­e delay during the Miami-Milwaukee game as security personnel tried to locate the culprit.
