Trump saps the clout of right-wing media
Right-wing media stars, beware: The president may be putting you out of business.
As Donald Trump’s presidency approaches its seventh month, it is clear that our commander in chief is committed to one thing above all: The Trump Show, broadcast on Twitter 24 hours a day.
He has an audience of millions, and he is an expert at trolling liberals.
And that may be taking a toll on his Fox News allies, who have made big money for years antagonizing the left.
If the president of the United States is rage-tweeting “Morning Joe” and posting gifs of himself wrestling the CNN logo, then where is the urgency to stay up to watch Tucker Carlson?
Last month, Carlson lost the key 25-to-54 demographic to MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow in prime time. Carlson came in third behind Sean Hannity, who also lost to Maddow.
In May, liberal MSNBC was up a shocking 118 percent over the same month last year.
Fox is still No. 1 in viewers overall, but advertisers care mightily about that crucial 25-to-54 age group. Fox is up 46 percent in that contingent from last year. But MSNBC is up 73 percent.
And Carlson has yet to match “The O’Reilly Factor” in total viewers, after Bill O’Reilly’s ignominious departure earlier this year.
The relevance of the ranters on the right is shrinking by the day, eclipsed by the ranter in the White House.
Meanwhile, MSNBC is enjoying the boon of liberal outrage over the president’s antics.
As long as Trump is in office with unfettered access to Twitter, outlets that attack the evil “liberal media” will continue to be drowned out by the president.
Donald Trump, acting as a powerful, one-man right-wing media outlet, has brought the fight to the liberal media’s doorstep — and inadvertently boosted their viewership in the process.
Unfortunately for the talking heads on the right, they have to compete with the Trump Show, and the Trump Show never loses in prime time.
